In the seemingly forbidding rain forest area of Guatemala and neighboring territory, there emerged the most splendid and advanced civilization of the New World. This area was occupied from Early Preclassic times onward, and villages or ceremonial centers were established, and grew, throughout the entire Preclassic period. However, most of the features we associate with Maya civilization, such as vaulted architecture, stone sculpture, and writing, did not become evident until the Terminal Preclassic.
