Olmec: Standing Figure Holding Baton
Jay I. Kislak Foundation

© Justin Kerr

Description
Dark green jade
Mexico; unknown provenience

Olmec culture

900-500 B.C.

Ht. 7.6 cm (3")

This compact little effigy, while generically Olmec, has a "provincial" feel to it, though we do not know where it was made. Olmec-related jade carvings have been produced from western and central Mexico down to Honduras and El Salvador. A certain dynamic quality is provided by a forward hunch to the head. Clothing is limited to a wide plain belt and apron. This figure holds a blunt baton (probable staff of authority) diagonally in front of his body. Comparable batons are depicted on other widespread Olmec carvings, both portable and monumental.
