About the Scholar... “Bryan R. Just is a doctoral candidate at Tulane University. He received his B.A. from Yale University in 1995 with a double major in the history of Art and Archaeological Studies. He earned his M.A. in Art History at Tulane University in 1999. For his doctorate, he is pursuing an interdisciplinary program in Art History and Linguistics and is specializing in the study of ancient art of Mesoamerica, particularly of the Maya. His dissertation, "The Social Discourse of Style in Ninth Century Maya Stelae of the Central Lowlands," reconsiders so-called "decadent" monumental sculpture of the ninth century as a means of addressing theoretical issues related to stylistic change and continuity. During the 2003-04 academic year, Just was a Junior Fellow in Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C.
